Synthetic Media
Synthetic media is any image, video or audio generated or substantially changed by AI to show something that did not happen. Deepfakes, face swaps and voice clones are the best-known forms. The same techniques power legitimate film effects, dubbing, accessibility tools and satire, and they are also used for fraud, harassment and non-consensual imagery.
This hub is where we cover that side of the subject:
- Face swap and deepfake tools, written consent-first: what they do, what they require, and what their terms prohibit.
- Detection: how to check whether an image or video is synthetic, and why no single check is reliable on its own.
- The rules: disclosure duties, impersonation law and provenance standards such as content credentials, explained from the primary sources.
This domain has a history here. Much of the press that still links to it covered hyperreal avatars and deepfakes on stage and screen, including Metaphysic’s 2022 run on America’s Got Talent. EveryAny.One is independent and not affiliated with Metaphysic, and we write about the field as observers.
We do not cover or link to tools made for non-consensual or explicit imagery.
