Best customer support software in 2026

Support tools are sold on features and bought on agent count, so the number that matters is cost per agent for the tier that includes what you need. That is harder to establish than it sounds: two of these advertise $19 an agent for tiers that exclude the channels most teams assume they are buying, one prices partly per AI resolution rather than per seat, and one publishes nothing at all. This guide sorts out what you would actually pay.

The short answer

  1. Freshdesk - Best value for mid-market teams. Growth from $19 per agent/month billed annually.
  2. Help Scout - Best for small teams and a human tone. Standard from $25 per user/month.
  3. Zendesk - Best for established support organisations. Support Team from $19 per agent/month billed annually.
  4. Intercom - Best for in-product support and AI deflection. Essential $29 per seat/month plus from $0.99 per Fin resolution.
  5. ServiceNow - Best for internal service management, not customer support. Not publicly disclosed. Quoted per organisation.

How we chose

  • Per-agent prices were read from each vendor's own pricing page on the verification date below.
  • We record what each entry tier excludes, because two of these advertise a ticketing-only price.
  • Usage-based AI pricing is shown separately from seat cost, since it behaves differently in a budget.
  • Products with no published pricing are included and marked as such rather than estimated.
  • No vendor saw their placement before publication.

What each option actually costs at 1 agent/month, 10 agents/month, 10 agents/year agents

Read from each vendor's own pricing page on 9 August 2026. Where a vendor's page would not reveal a price at a given volume, the cell says so rather than carrying an estimate.

The cheapest tier that includes messaging and a help centre, not the cheapest tier advertised. Zendesk's $19 Support Team is ticketing only, so its figure here is Suite Team at $55. Intercom adds from $0.99 per Fin AI resolution on top of seats, which is not included below because it scales with contact volume rather than headcount. ServiceNow publishes nothing.

How the ranking was scored

Each option is scored 0 to 10 on the dimensions below, weighted as shown, and the total is calculated from those numbers rather than asserted. Weights sum to 100.

Weighted scores by dimension
Option Cost at 10 agents 25% Breadth of fit 20% Ecosystem 20% Time to value 20% AI deflection 15% Total
Freshdesk 108686 7.8
Intercom 678710 7.4
Help Scout 866106 7.3
Zendesk 491068 7.2

ServiceNow is excluded from the rubric rather than scored zero on cost: it publishes no price, and inventing one to complete a table would be worse than the gap. Intercom scores highest on AI deflection because Fin can run on top of another help desk with no seats at all, which is the most overlooked option in this category.

Freshdesk Best value for mid-market teams

Best for
Teams wanting Zendesk capability for less
Starting price
Growth from $19 per agent/month billed annually
Free plan
No

Freshdesk delivers most of what teams actually use Zendesk for at roughly a third of the per-agent cost, and Growth at $19 already includes automations, a knowledge base and reporting rather than holding them back. For a support team of five to fifty agents, this is the strongest value here.

Watch out: Freddy AI Copilot is a $29 per-agent add-on, which is more than the Growth plan itself. If AI assistance is central to your plan, the effective price at the entry tier more than doubles.

Help Scout Best for small teams and a human tone

Best for
Companies outgrowing a shared inbox
Starting price
Standard from $25 per user/month
Free plan
No

The best product here at making support feel like a person rather than a ticket number. Shared inboxes, a knowledge base and chat are set up in an afternoon with no project, and the knowledge base needs no separate launch.

Watch out: Routing and SLA management are deliberately shallow, which becomes a limit past roughly twenty agents. AI Answers is billed from $0.75 per resolution on top of the plan.

Zendesk Best for established support organisations

Best for
Complex routing, SLAs and integration depth
Starting price
Support Team from $19 per agent/month billed annually
Free plan
No

The deepest ecosystem in customer support, and it scales without complaint. Skills-based routing, SLA management and a very large app marketplace are the reasons large support organisations stay, and no cheaper tool matches that depth.

Watch out: The advertised $19 Support Team tier is ticketing only, with no messaging, voice or help centre. The Zendesk most buyers mean is Suite Team at $55 an agent, and comparing $19 against rivals' full plans is not a like comparison.

Intercom Best for in-product support and AI deflection

Best for
SaaS companies supporting users inside the product
Starting price
Essential $29 per seat/month plus from $0.99 per Fin resolution
Free plan
No

The Messenger and in-app targeting are the best in the category, and Fin deflects a genuine share of contacts. At $0.99 a resolution, compare that against what an agent costs to handle the same volume, because the arithmetic often favours Fin.

Watch out: Per-resolution billing means a busy month costs more, which is difficult to budget and hard to cap. If you already have a help desk you like, buy Fin on its own rather than migrating.

ServiceNow Best for internal service management, not customer support

Best for
Large enterprises consolidating internal service desks
Starting price
Not publicly disclosed. Quoted per organisation
Free plan
No

Included here because it is frequently shortlisted alongside the others and should not be. As an internal ITSM platform it is the standard, and its workflow engine genuinely extends across HR, security and facilities. A free developer instance lets you build and test before committing.

Watch out: No published pricing at any level, priced by product, user type and volume. It is not a customer-facing help desk, and implementation is measured in quarters rather than days.

The $19 trap

Two products here advertise $19 an agent and they are not comparable.

Freshdesk Growth at $19 includes email ticketing, automations, a knowledge base and reporting.

Zendesk Support Team at $19 is ticketing only. No messaging, no voice, no help centre. The Zendesk that competes with Freshdesk Growth is Suite Team at $55.

Any comparison table putting those two numbers side by side is wrong, and plenty do. That is why the cost model above uses the cheapest tier including messaging and a help centre rather than the cheapest tier advertised.

AI pricing behaves differently from seats

Intercom and Help Scout both bill AI per resolution: from $0.99 and $0.75 respectively. Freshdesk bills AI per agent at $29.

The distinction matters for budgeting. Per-resolution cost rises with a busy month, which finance teams dislike but which tracks value honestly. Per-agent AI is predictable and you pay for it whether it deflects anything or not.

The most overlooked option in this category: Fin can run on top of a help desk you already own, with no Intercom seats at all. If your problem is repetitive questions rather than the desk itself, price that before migrating anything.

Where ServiceNow belongs

It keeps appearing on customer-support shortlists and it does not belong there. ServiceNow is internal service management: incidents, changes and requests inside a large organisation. It is excellent at that, publishes no pricing whatsoever, and takes quarters to implement.

If you need a customer-facing help desk this month, the answer is one of the four above.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest customer support software?

Freshdesk Growth at $19 per agent per month on annual billing, and unlike Zendesk's $19 tier it includes automations and a knowledge base. Help Scout at $25 is the next cheapest and is friendlier for very small teams.

Is Zendesk worth the price?

For an established support organisation with complex routing, SLA commitments and dependence on third-party apps, yes. For a team of five replacing a shared inbox, no: Suite Team at $55 an agent is roughly triple Freshdesk for capability you will not use.

What does Zendesk's $19 plan actually include?

Ticketing. Support Team excludes the messaging, voice and help centre that come with the Suite, so the tier most buyers actually need is Suite Team at $55 per agent. This is the single most common misreading of pricing in this category.

How much does AI support deflection cost?

Intercom's Fin is billed from $0.99 per resolution and can run on top of an existing help desk with no seats. Help Scout's AI Answers starts at $0.75 per resolution. Freshdesk's Freddy AI Copilot is $29 per agent per month, which is a seat charge rather than usage.

Can I use one of these for internal IT support?

You can, but they are built for customers. Internal incident, change and problem management is ServiceNow or Freshservice territory, and the workflows differ enough that the wrong choice creates real friction.
