Hootsuite schedules and publishes social posts, monitors mentions, manages engagement across networks and reports on performance from one dashboard. It effectively created the category in 2008 and remains the enterprise default, though its pricing has moved well above the tools most small teams now use.

What Hootsuite actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above multiplied out to twelve months, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way.
| Plan | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Standardper user | $99 | $1188 |
| Professionalper user | $199 | $2388 |
| Advancedper user | $399 | $4788 |
Which Hootsuite plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You manage up to ten social accounts alone | Standard | $99 a month for one user. Note that is the entry price, so there is no cheap Hootsuite tier. |
| You need unlimited accounts and trend forecasting | Professional | $199 per user a month. |
| You need social listening and approval workflows | Advanced | $399 per user a month, and where the compliance and monitoring case actually lives. |
| You post to a few accounts on a small budget | Do not buy Hootsuite | Buffer at $5 per channel does the scheduling for a fraction. $99 buys capability you will not open. |
| You need the best reporting for stakeholders | Compare Sprout Social first | Sprout's reporting is stronger, at comparable or higher per-seat cost. |
Verdict by who you are
Agency managing many client accountsYes
Unlimited accounts on Professional and multi-team administration are built for this.
Regulated organisation needing approvalsYes
Approval workflows before publication are a genuine compliance requirement Advanced satisfies.
Small business or solo creatorNo
$99 as an entry price is indefensible for scheduling a few accounts. Buffer or Later instead.
Brand needing listeningCompare first
Available on Advanced at $399 per user, so price it against Sprout Social before committing.

Our assessment
Hootsuite is a capable, mature platform that has priced itself out of the market segment that once defined it. At $99 a month for a single user managing ten accounts, it is competing against tools charging a tenth of that for scheduling that most small teams find sufficient. What still justifies it is everything above scheduling: approval workflows, social listening, permissions across large teams and reporting that satisfies a marketing director. Those are agency and enterprise requirements, and for that audience it remains a reasonable purchase. For everyone else the price is very hard to defend.
What works in Hootsuite
- Broad network coverage with reliable publishing
- Approval workflows and permissions suited to larger teams
- Social listening and monitoring on Advanced
- Mature reporting that stands up to executive scrutiny
What doesn't
- Entry price of $99 is far above comparable scheduling tools
- Standard covers only one user and ten accounts
- Interface is dense and dated in places
- Listening, the strongest differentiator, is Advanced only

Hootsuite competitors and alternatives
| Alternative | Why you might pick it instead |
|---|---|
| Buffer | Dramatically cheaper and adequate for most small businesses. |
| Later | Stronger for visual-first planning on Instagram and TikTok. |
| Sprout Social | The closest enterprise rival, with better reporting and similar pricing. |
The price problem, stated plainly
Standard is $99 per user per month for ten social accounts and a single seat. Buffer’s paid plans start around a tenth of that and handle scheduling competently. If your requirement is “post to four channels on a calendar”, Hootsuite is not the rational choice and has not been for several years.
That is not a criticism of the product so much as an observation about who it is now built for.
What actually justifies the cost
Three things, and none of them are scheduling:
- Approval workflows. Regulated industries and large brands need a post reviewed before it publishes, with an audit trail. Cheap tools do not do this.
- Social listening. Monitoring mentions, sentiment and competitors across networks, available on Advanced.
- Team administration. Roles, permissions and account groupings for agencies running many clients or enterprises running many regions.
If you need those, $199 or $399 per user is defensible. If you do not, you are paying for governance you will never open.
Watch the per-user maths
Hootsuite prices per user, and Standard includes only one. An agency with five people managing clients is at Professional or Advanced across five seats, which is a substantial annual commitment. Model the whole team before comparing against per-account competitors, because the two pricing models are not directly comparable.
The category has moved
Scheduling has been commoditised, and the platforms themselves now offer free native tools. The tools winning the small and mid-market compete on price and simplicity, while Sprout Social competes with Hootsuite at the top on reporting quality. Hootsuite’s position is the middle of that squeeze, which is worth knowing when assessing how the product will evolve.
