Our assessment
Box is bought by compliance and IT rather than by end users, and understanding that explains both its strengths and its reputation. Retention, classification, legal hold, DLP and granular external sharing controls are genuinely better than the storage bundled into productivity suites, and unlimited storage from $15 per user removes the capacity conversation entirely. What it is not is the nicest place to work with files day to day, where Dropbox's sync remains better and the suites are more convenient. If nobody in your organisation has asked about retention policies, you almost certainly do not need this.

Unlimited storage changes the comparison
From Business at $15 per user per month, Box does not meter storage. Against per-terabyte pricing elsewhere, that removes an entire category of planning and internal argument. For teams holding video, scanned records or long retention archives, it is frequently the deciding factor and makes Box cheaper than it first appears.
The tier where governance actually starts
Business and Business Plus are good collaboration products. The compliance capabilities that distinguish Box, retention policies, legal hold, classification and data loss prevention through Box Shield, arrive at Enterprise ($35) and Enterprise Plus ($50). If regulation is your reason for choosing Box, price those tiers, because the cheaper plans will not satisfy the requirement.
Box or Dropbox?
They look similar and are sold to different buyers. Dropbox optimises for the person moving files: better sync, smoother client, less administration. Box optimises for the organisation holding the files: permissions, retention, audit and external controls. A design studio will prefer Dropbox. A hospital or a bank will not have the choice.
The overlap problem, honestly
Most organisations already receive substantial storage inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, and SharePoint has improved considerably.
