monday.com
A colourful work OS you configure rather than adopt.
- Productivity
- Sales
- Marketing
- from $9/mo
monday.com is a work operating system built on customisable boards, where columns behave like typed database fields and views, automations and dashboards sit on top. It is sold less as project management than as a platform for building the internal tool your team would otherwise keep in a spreadsheet.

What monday.com actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above multiplied out to twelve months, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way.
| Plan | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Basicper seat, billed annually, minimum 3 seats | $9 | $108 |
| Standardper seat, billed annually, minimum 3 seats | $12 | $144 |
| Proper seat, billed annually, minimum 3 seats | $20 | $240 |
Which monday.com plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are one or two people | Free, or look elsewhere | Free covers 2 seats, but paid plans have a three-seat minimum, so a two-person team pays for three. |
| A small team needs structured boards | Basic | $9 per seat billed annually, minimum 3 seats, so $27 a month is the real floor. |
| You need timeline, calendar and guest access | Standard | $12 per seat, from $36 a month total. The tier most teams actually need. |
| You need private boards and time tracking | Pro | $20 per seat, from $60 a month total, with 25,000 automations. |
| You track software delivery | Do not buy monday.com | Jira or Linear are built for that. monday is for operational work. |
| You want something that works without setup | Consider Asana or Trello | monday rewards configuration; it does not arrive opinionated. |

Our assessment
monday.com's strength is that it will become almost anything: a project tracker, a lightweight CRM, a content calendar, an applicant pipeline. Typed columns and approachable automations mean an operations lead can build a working internal tool in an afternoon without involving engineering. The same flexibility is the risk, because a badly designed board is just a spreadsheet with better colours, and nothing in the product prevents that. Pricing needs care too: the three-seat minimum makes the real entry cost $27 a month, and automation limits, not features, are what push teams up the tiers.
What works in monday.com
- Extremely flexible, and genuinely usable by non-technical teams
- Automations are easy to build and cover most routine handoffs
- Dashboards aggregate across boards well
- Guest access makes client-facing work straightforward
What doesn't
- Three-seat minimum on all paid plans
- Automation and integration actions are metered per tier
- Boards sprawl quickly without a clear owner
- Value depends heavily on how well it is configured

monday.com competitors and alternatives
| Alternative | Why you might pick it instead |
|---|---|
| Asana | More opinionated and better structured for cross-team work. |
| Airtable | Stronger as a genuine relational database with app-building on top. |
| Smartsheet | Better for enterprises whose teams think in spreadsheets. |
Asana
Productivity
Work management for teams that have outgrown a board but not hired a PM.
Trello
Productivity
Kanban boards simple enough that nobody needs training.
The seat minimum changes the entry price
Every paid plan requires at least three seats. Basic is advertised at $9 per seat, so the genuine minimum spend is $27 a month, and a two-person business either stays on Free or pays for a seat it does not use. Worth knowing before comparing the headline figure against tools with no minimum.
Automations are the real tier ladder
Features differ between Basic, Standard and Pro, but what actually forces upgrades is the automation and integration allowance: 250 actions a month on Standard against 25,000 on Pro. A board with a few active recipes consumes a Standard allowance surprisingly fast, and hitting the ceiling silently stops your workflows. Estimate action volume, not just seat count.
Configuration is the product
monday.com ships as raw material. That is the point, and it means the outcome depends on whoever designs the boards. Well built, it replaces three spreadsheets and a weekly status meeting. Built carelessly, it is an expensive spreadsheet with status colours. Before rolling it out, decide who owns board design and what happens when someone wants a new one.
Where the alternatives are better
Asana is more opinionated, which is an advantage when you want the tool to suggest a structure rather than expect you to invent one. Airtable is the better choice if the underlying data is genuinely relational. And for pure software delivery, Jira remains the right tool despite monday offering a dev product.
