Perplexity answers questions by searching the web and synthesising a response with inline citations to the pages it used. That citation behaviour is what distinguishes it from a chat assistant, and it is why anyone doing SEO or content strategy should be watching it: it is the clearest window into how AI answers select and credit sources.

What Perplexity actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above multiplied out to twelve months, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way.
| Plan | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $17 | $204 |
| Max | $167 | $2004 |
Which Perplexity plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want cited answers occasionally | Free | Limited Pro searches a day. Enough to see whether the citation habit suits you. |
| You research daily and want to check sources | Pro | $17 a month billed annually, or $20 monthly, with higher limits and file uploads. |
| You run very heavy research volumes | Max | $167 a month billed annually. Only justified by genuinely constant use. |
| Your team needs shared administration and internal search | Enterprise | Quote only, adding data controls and internal knowledge search. |
| You mainly want to draft and edit writing | Consider ChatGPT or Claude instead | Perplexity is an answer engine. Assistants are better at producing text. |
| You will not open the citations | Do not buy Perplexity | The citations are the product. Without checking them you have an assistant that is worse at writing. |

Our assessment
Perplexity does one thing better than the general assistants: it tells you where an answer came from, in line, so you can check it. For research that has to be defensible, that is worth more than a slightly better-written paragraph. It is also the cheapest way for anyone doing content or SEO work to study AI citation behaviour directly, which is increasingly a commercial question rather than a curiosity. It remains a narrower product than ChatGPT or Claude, and the citations are only as good as the pages it chose, so it rewards a reader who actually clicks through.
What works in Perplexity
- Inline citations make answers checkable rather than trusted
- Deep Research produces genuinely useful sourced reports
- Free tier is sufficient to understand the product properly
- Sonar API brings cited search into your own applications
What doesn't
- Narrower than a general assistant, with no real coding ability
- Citation quality depends entirely on which pages it selected
- Max at $200 monthly is a steep jump from Pro
- Still summarises confidently when the underlying sources disagree

Why we recommend it as a research instrument
Anyone publishing software information now has a commercial interest in how AI answers pick sources. Perplexity is the cheapest way to observe that directly: ask it the questions your buyers ask, then read which pages it cited and what it quoted from them.
The pattern is consistent and instructive. Short factual statements, tables, explicit prices, named people and clear dates get quoted. Long narrative paragraphs get ignored. That observation shaped how this site structures its own pages, which is a disclosure as much as a recommendation.
Citations are a starting point, not a guarantee
An inline citation tells you where a claim came from. It does not tell you the source was right, current, or representative. Perplexity will confidently summarise a page that is three years out of date or a forum post stating something incorrectly, and the citation makes that feel more authoritative rather than less.
The correct habit is to treat cited answers as a fast route to the primary sources, then read them.
Pro or free?
Free is enough to understand the product and do occasional research. Pro at $17 a month billed annually raises the limits, allows model selection and adds file analysis, which matters if this is a daily working tool. Max at $167 billed annually, or $200 monthly, is aimed at very heavy users and is difficult to justify unless Deep Research is central to your job.
Where the assistants are better
For drafting, editing, coding or anything conversational over long documents, ChatGPT and Claude are stronger products. Perplexity is a search tool that writes, not a writing tool that searches, and the distinction is worth keeping in mind when deciding which subscription to hold.
