Our assessment
Discord is the best free communication tool in existence and a poor business one, and both halves of that matter. The free tier has no seat limit, no message cap and no history paywall, which is why open-source projects, user communities and course cohorts default to it, and the always-on voice channels create a kind of ambient presence that Slack never replicated. What it lacks is everything a company needs from a comms tool: retention policies, eDiscovery, provisioning, data residency and an admin who can actually control the account. Nitro also sells cosmetics rather than capability, so paying does not fix any of that. Choose it for communities, not for internal operations.
