Our assessment
Zoom still wins the moment a call includes people who do not work for you. Joining is frictionless, the client degrades gracefully on bad connections, and meeting-room hardware support is unmatched. Its problem is strategic rather than technical: for most organisations the meeting product is now bundled into a suite they already buy, so Zoom has to justify a second line item. The response has been to broaden into chat, phone, whiteboard and events, none of which is the reason anyone chooses Zoom. One detail buyers should note: annual prepayment is now the only option on published plans.

Read the billing footnote
Zoom’s pricing page shows monthly figures, but the small print is explicit: all published plans are billed annually as a single upfront charge, and the monthly rate is the annual total divided by twelve, shown for comparison only. Pro at $14.16 per user per month is therefore roughly $170 per user paid at once. Budget accordingly, and do not assume you can cancel mid-year.
Licence bands are a real constraint
Pro is limited to 99 licences and Business to 250. Crossing either threshold means an Enterprise conversation with unpublished pricing, so if you are approaching the boundary, raise it before renewal rather than after.
Where Zoom is still clearly better
External meetings. A candidate, client or supplier can click a link and be in the call in seconds with no account and no install. Microsoft Teams has improved but still introduces friction for guests, and that friction is paid by the most important people on the call. If your meetings are mostly internal, this advantage is worth very little.
The consolidation question
The honest framing for most buyers is not “Zoom or Teams” but “do we pay for Zoom in addition to the suite we already own?” Reasonable answers exist: sales teams doing external demos all day, anyone running webinars, and organisations with significant room hardware. For everyone else, the meeting product bundled into their existing licence is usually good enough.
