Which Workday plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are a large enterprise replacing HR and finance systems | Request a quote | Typically priced per worker per year by module on multi-year agreements. Ask for module, worker band and term separately. |
| You need workforce planning and analytics at scale | Request a quote | This is Workday's genuine strength and the reason enterprises accept the cost. |
| You have fewer than about 500 employees | Consider BambooHR instead | Published per-employee pricing, live in weeks rather than quarters. |
| You want HR, IT and spend together | Consider Rippling instead | Different architecture, though also quote-only. |
| You need a price before engaging sales | Expect not to get one | Nothing is published at any level. |
Verdict by who you are
Large enterprise HR functionYes
Workforce planning, compensation modelling and multi-entity payroll at a depth mid-market tools do not attempt.
Finance and HR consolidating systemsYes
One data model across both is the argument, and it is a real one at scale.
Mid-sized companyNo
Implementation is measured in quarters and costs more than the software many companies need in total.
Buyer needing transparencyNo
No published pricing, and multi-year terms limit your flexibility afterwards.

What leaving Workday would cost
moderate lock-in
Workday scores on public API. Portability 5/10 ; lock-in is the inverse. How this is calculated.
No published price, deliberately
We checked on 9 August 2026 and Workday publishes no rate card; pricing paths resolve to contact forms. Reported deals are generally structured per worker per year, per module, on multi-year terms, which means two similar companies can pay materially different amounts for the same software. Treat any figure quoted online as someone else’s negotiation rather than a benchmark.
The architecture is the argument
Most enterprises run HR in one system and finance in another, joined by integrations that drift. Workday holds both on one model, so a reorganisation, a new cost centre or a headcount change lands once and is visible to both sides. When a CFO and a CHRO can agree on the number of employees without a reconciliation meeting, that is the product working.
Implementation is the real project
Workday deployments are measured in quarters and led by implementation partners. The licence is typically the smaller half of first-year cost. Organisations that under-resource the internal side, particularly data cleansing and process decisions, are the ones whose go-live slips.
Where it is clearly the wrong choice
Below roughly a thousand employees the economics rarely work. BambooHR, HiBob, Rippling and Deel cover hiring, onboarding, records and payroll with published pricing and setup measured in weeks. The case for Workday starts when complexity, not headcount alone, has outgrown them: multiple countries, multiple legal entities, and a finance function that needs the same data.
Workday questions, answered
- Is Workday worth it?
- Workday's real product is the shared data model.
- How much does Workday cost?
- Workday does not publish prices. Its pricing page asks you to request a quote, so cost cannot be established without contacting sales.
- Does Workday have a free plan or free trial?
- Workday has no free plan. No free trial is offered.
- What is the best Workday alternative?
- It depends on the job. SAP SuccessFactors: The direct enterprise rival, usually where SAP finance is already installed. BambooHR: Appropriate and far cheaper for small and mid-sized HR needs. Rippling or Deel: Better for fast-growing companies, especially with international contractors.
- Can I self-host Workday?
- No. Workday is a hosted service only, so your data lives on the vendor's infrastructure.
Workday publishes no standalone pricing page, so this opens the product site. Figures here were read on 9 August 2026.
