Google Search Console pricing against its competitors
Compared on the smallest invoice each vendor will accept, not on the advertised per-seat rate. Where a product has a seat minimum, the figure below is the minimum times the rate, because that is the cheque you would actually write.
| Product | Cheapest paid entry | Free plan | Against Google Search Console |

Which Google Search Console plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You own a website of any kind | Search Console | Free, and there is no paid tier. Verify your property today; there is no reason not to. |
| You want competitor data | Do not expect it here | Search Console only reports on properties you own. Competitor research needs Ahrefs or Semrush. |
| You need more than 16 months of history | Export regularly, or use a paid tool | Data expires after 16 months. If you want longer trends, you must extract it yourself before it goes. |
Verdict by who you are
Anyone who owns a websiteYes
It is free, it is first-party Google data, and it is the only source that tells you what Google actually thinks of your site.
SEO paying for a research platformYes
Use it to sanity-check your paid tool's estimates. Third-party keyword volumes are models; this is measurement.
Anyone doing competitor researchNo
Not possible. Search Console reports only on properties you verify.
Analyst needing multi-year trendsCompare first
Usable, but export before the 16-month window closes or the history is simply gone.
Should you buy Google Search Console?
Buy Google Search Console if…
- Anyone who owns a website, without exception
- Diagnosing indexing and crawl problems
- Verifying whether a paid tool's estimates resemble reality
Do not buy Google Search Console if…
- Competitor research, which it cannot do at all
- Long-term historical analysis beyond 16 months
- Keyword discovery for pages you have not published
What leaving Google Search Console would cost
moderate lock-in
Google Search Console scores on public API, documented export. Portability 6/10 ; lock-in is the inverse. How this is calculated.
Why it sits underneath everything else
Paid SEO platforms model the world. They estimate search volume, infer difficulty and approximate traffic from clickstream samples. Those estimates are useful for deciding what to write. They are not measurements.
Search Console reports impressions, clicks and average position as recorded by Google for your verified property. When a paid tool says a page gets 2,000 visits a month and Search Console says 340, Search Console is right. Anyone doing SEO seriously uses it to calibrate the tools they pay for.
Set up BigQuery export early
The web interface caps rows and aggregates aggressively, which frustrates real analysis. The bulk data export to BigQuery removes that limit and, crucially, keeps history beyond the sixteen-month retention window. It costs only BigQuery storage, and configuring it on day one means that in two years you will have data you would otherwise have lost.
Almost nobody does this until they need it, at which point the data no longer exists.
What it deliberately will not tell you
Query data is filtered for privacy, so long-tail terms with very few searches are omitted and the totals will never exactly reconcile with the sum of your queries. This is by design rather than a bug, and it is worth understanding before building a report that assumes the numbers add up.
Where the paid tools earn their money
Competitors. Search Console shows your site and only your site. Everything about what rivals rank for, which pages earn their links and where the gaps are comes from Ahrefs, Semrush or similar. Use the free tool for truth about yourself and the paid tools for information about everyone else.
Google Search Console questions, answered

- Does Google Search Console have a free plan or free trial?
- Google Search Console has a free plan. No free trial is offered.

Where Google Search Console appears on this site
No buyer guide, article or other profile here references Google Search Console yet. Its own record is verified and dated, but it has not been placed against alternatives in a comparison, so there is nothing further to link to. Until then the category index is the best place to see what it sits beside.
