What Hootsuite actually costs over a year

A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Where a vendor quotes only a yearly figure it is divided by twelve rather than left out, and the Quoted column says which figure the vendor actually publishes.

What leaving Hootsuite would cost

5/10 Lock-in

moderate lock-in

Hootsuite scores on public API. Portability 5/10 ; lock-in is the inverse. How this is calculated.

The price problem, stated plainly

Standard is $99 per user per month for ten social accounts and a single seat. Buffer’s paid plans start around a tenth of that and handle scheduling competently. If your requirement is “post to four channels on a calendar”, Hootsuite is not the rational choice and has not been for several years.

That is not a criticism of the product so much as an observation about who it is now built for.

What actually justifies the cost

Three things, and none of them are scheduling:

  • Approval workflows. Regulated industries and large brands need a post reviewed before it publishes, with an audit trail. Cheap tools do not do this.
  • Social listening. Monitoring mentions, sentiment and competitors across networks, available on Advanced.
  • Team administration. Roles, permissions and account groupings for agencies running many clients or enterprises running many regions.

If you need those, $199 or $399 per user is defensible. If you do not, you are paying for governance you will never open.

Watch the per-user maths

Hootsuite prices per user, and Standard includes only one. An agency with five people managing clients is at Professional or Advanced across five seats, which is a substantial annual commitment. Model the whole team before comparing against per-account competitors, because the two pricing models are not directly comparable.

The category has moved

Scheduling has been commoditised, and the platforms themselves now offer free native tools. The tools winning the small and mid-market compete on price and simplicity, while Sprout Social competes with Hootsuite at the top on reporting quality. Hootsuite’s position is the middle of that squeeze, which is worth knowing when assessing how the product will evolve.
