What Vercel actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Preview deployments are the actual product
Ask a team that has moved to Vercel what they would miss and the answer is rarely the CDN. It is that every pull request gets a working URL a designer or a client can open. Review stops being a description of a change and becomes the change. That is worth more than most infrastructure features.
Understand the billing dimensions before launch
Vercel’s Pro plan is a seat fee plus metered usage. The dimensions that catch people out are bandwidth, function invocations, function duration and image optimisation. A single popular post with large images can move the bill in a way a fixed-price host would not. Set spend alerts on day one, not after the first surprise.
Hobby means non-commercial
The free tier is generous and explicitly not for commercial projects. Running a business site on Hobby is a terms violation, not a clever saving.
The lock-in question, fairly
Next.js is open source and runs elsewhere. But the features that make it pleasant - incremental static regeneration, image optimisation, middleware at the edge - are best supported on Vercel, and reproducing them on another host is real work. That is not malice; it is what happens when a framework and a platform share a roadmap. Decide with it in mind.
