DocuSign is an electronic signature and agreement management platform for preparing, sending, signing and tracking documents. What DocuSign actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Where a vendor quotes only a yearly figure it is divided by twelve rather than left out, and the Quoted column says which figure the vendor actually publishes.
| Plan | Quoted | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | per year | $11 | $132 |
| Standardper user | per year | $30 | $360 |
| Business Proper user | per year | $45 | $540 |
Which DocuSign plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You sign a handful of documents a year | Personal | $132 a year for 5 envelopes a month. Check whether a tool you already own includes signing before paying this. |
| A small team sends contracts regularly | Standard | $360 per user a year with 100 envelopes each and shared templates. |
| You collect payment alongside signature | Business Pro | $540 per user a year, and payment collection is the specific reason to step up. |
| You need identity verification or contract lifecycle management | Enterprise | Quote only, and the tier where DocuSign becomes a contracts platform rather than signing. |
| Your CRM or HR system already includes signing | Do not buy DocuSign | HubSpot, Box and many HR platforms include e-signature. Paying separately is a common duplication. |
| You send high volumes on a cheap tier | Count your envelopes first | Envelope allowances are per user per year, and overages are where budgets break. |

Our assessment
DocuSign is the safe choice, and in signing that counts for a great deal: counterparties recognise it, legal teams accept its audit trail, and the identity verification options hold up in regulated contexts. What buyers should scrutinise is the envelope allowance, because that, rather than seats, is what determines whether the price is reasonable. Personal permits five envelopes a month and Standard 100 per user per year, which sounds generous until a busy sales quarter. Overages and forced upgrades are where this product becomes expensive.
What works in DocuSign
- The most widely recognised and trusted signing brand
- Audit trail and identity options satisfy regulated requirements
- Templates and bulk send remove real administrative work
- Strong API for embedding signing into your own product
What doesn't
- Envelope limits, not seats, drive the real cost
- Annual commitment on all published plans
- Materially more expensive than adequate alternatives
- Feature gates put common needs like payment collection on higher tiers

What leaving DocuSign would cost
moderate lock-in
DocuSign scores on public API. Portability 5/10 ; lock-in is the inverse. How this is calculated.
DocuSign competitors and alternatives
| Alternative | Why you might pick it instead |
|---|---|
| Dropbox Sign | Simpler and cheaper, with a well-regarded API for embedded signing. |
| Adobe Acrobat Sign | Sensible if you already hold Adobe licences across the business. |
| SignWell or Documenso | Much cheaper for low volumes, and Documenso is open source. |
Envelopes are the unit that matters
An envelope is one send, regardless of how many documents or signers it contains. Personal allows five per month. Standard allows 100 per user per year, which is roughly eight a month. A recruiter sending offer letters or a sales team closing weekly will pass that quickly, and the cost of exceeding it is the thing to negotiate before signing rather than after.
Bundling documents into a single envelope is the standard way to make an allowance last, and it is worth training the team to do it.
Where the price is genuinely justified
Three situations: when the counterparty expects DocuSign specifically and an unfamiliar tool creates friction on a deal; when you need identity verification beyond an email link; and when the audit trail has to survive a dispute. Outside those, cheaper tools produce a legally valid signature just as well.
The API is a separate product decision
Embedding signing into your own application is a common reason to choose DocuSign, and it is priced on API volume rather than seats. If that is your use case, evaluate it as an infrastructure purchase and compare against Dropbox Sign, which is generally regarded as the friendlier API at lower volume.
What to check before buying
Count your real monthly sends across everyone who will need it, including HR and finance rather than just sales. Then check whether a tool you already own covers it: Dropbox includes Sign, and Adobe Acrobat includes signing. Paying separately makes sense when recognition and compliance matter, not by default.
