Squarespace
Templates that are genuinely hard to make ugly.

- from $19/mo
Squarespace is a hosted website and commerce platform covering sites, online stores, scheduling, memberships and email marketing. Where other builders sell freedom, Squarespace sells constraint: its templates enforce typography, spacing and responsive behaviour, which is why sites built by non-designers still look considered.

Squarespace pricing
Prices below were read from the vendor's own pricing page on 20 August 2026. Pricing model: subscription. Free trial: 14 days.
| Plan | Price | Billing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $19 | per month | Annual billing. Website, free custom domain for a year, built-in AI tools and up to 2 contributors. Card rates from 2.9% + $0.30, with a 2% store transaction fee |
| Core | $29 | per month | Annual billing. Unlimited contributors, advanced analytics and no store transaction fee. This is the tier a team of three needs, and the upgrade is $10 a month rather than a seat fee |
| Plus | $49 | per month | Annual billing. Advanced commerce, abandoned-cart recovery and lower card rates at 2.7% + $0.30 |
| Advanced | $99 | per month | Annual billing. Advanced selling features and API access |
What Squarespace actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Where a vendor quotes only a yearly figure it is divided by twelve rather than left out, and the Quoted column says which figure the vendor actually publishes.
| Plan | Quoted | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | per month | $19 | $228 |
| Core | per month | $29 | $348 |
| Plus | per month | $49 | $588 |
| Advanced | per month | $99 | $1,188 |
Which Squarespace plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want a good-looking site with a custom domain | Basic | $19 a month on annual billing. Enough for a portfolio or brochure site. |
| You need better analytics and lower transaction fees | Core | $29 a month, and worth it once you sell anything regularly. |
| You sell and need abandoned cart recovery | Plus | $49 a month, where commerce becomes serious rather than incidental. |
| You need API access and advanced selling | Advanced | $99 a month. |
| You publish a lot of content | Consider WordPress instead | Squarespace's editorial tooling does not scale to high-volume publishing. |
| You have a large catalogue or complex fulfilment | Consider Shopify instead | Shopify is a commerce platform; Squarespace sells alongside a website. |

Our assessment
Squarespace's constraint is its product. By limiting what you can change, the templates guarantee a coherent result, and for a photographer, studio or service business that is exactly the right trade. Scheduling, memberships and commerce being native rather than plug-ins removes a whole class of maintenance. Where it falls down is at the edges: transaction fees apply below the higher tiers, the blog is adequate rather than good, and large catalogues quickly reveal that commerce is a feature here rather than the foundation. Like every hosted builder, there is no export, so the choice is effectively permanent.
What works in Squarespace
- Templates produce a professional result without design skill
- Scheduling, memberships and commerce built in rather than bolted on
- Hosting, SSL, CDN and domains handled with nothing to configure
- Consistently good mobile behaviour without separate work
What doesn't
- Transaction fees on lower tiers, on top of payment processing
- Limited layout control compared with freeform builders
- Blog and content tooling are weak for SEO-led publishing
- No code export, so migration means rebuilding

Constraint as a feature
Most website builders fail because they let an untrained user make every decision. Squarespace removes most of those decisions: type scales, spacing and responsive breakpoints come from the template. You lose the ability to place something at an arbitrary position, and you gain a site that still looks intentional on a phone. For the audience it targets, that is the correct trade.
Transaction fees are the detail to check
Squarespace charges its own transaction fee on commerce below the higher tiers, and that sits on top of what Stripe or PayPal take. If you sell in any volume, work out the crossover point at which moving up a plan, or moving to Shopify entirely, costs less than the fees.
Where the tiers actually matter
Basic at $19 covers a website and light selling. Core at $29 is where analytics and reduced fees arrive. Plus at $49 adds the commerce features that a real store needs, including abandoned cart recovery. Advanced at $99 is bought for API access and advanced selling, and most small businesses never reach it.
Note that these are annual-billing rates. Paying monthly costs meaningfully more.
Squarespace, Wix or Framer?
Wix gives more freedom and more opportunities to produce something inconsistent. Framer has the highest design ceiling and expects more skill. Squarespace sits between them and is the safest choice when the person maintaining the site is the business owner rather than a designer. If content volume is the plan, none of the three is the right answer.
